Llegar

 

Cuando escribo, a menudo miro en el «DRAE» el significado originario de las palabras o su origen. Eso me ayuda a decidirme por una de las palabras que, en principio, tienen el mismo significado. Las lenguas son realmente mágicas. Porque las palabras lo son. Sorprende conocer su origen remoto. Cuando las mismas letras representaban imágenes. A veces, por ejemplo, hay que elegir entre «venir» y «llegar». La primera procede del verbo latino «venire», y la segunda, del verbo latino «plicare». Y «plicare» significa «plegar», «doblar». ¿Sabes por qué «plegar» acabó convirtiéndose en «llegar»? Porque los marineros plegaban las velas cuando llegaban al puerto. En el latín vulgar, «plicare» significaba ya «atracar», es decir, situar la embarcación en el puerto junto a las demás y doblar las velas. Detrás de cada palabra hay una larga historia.
