El escritor inglés Horatio Walpole / Horace Walpole / IV conde de Orford, (Londres, 1717 – Londres, 1797) era hijo del primer ministro Robert Walpole. Él, además de escritor e hijo del considerado primner primer ministro de Gran Bretaña, fue político, arquitecto... y primo del famoso marino Horacio Nelson. Su obra más conocida es la novela gótica «El castillo de Otranto», precedente de este género (o subgénero).
