El autor fue galardonado en 1923 con el Premio Nobel de Literatura. Aunque también creó piezas teatrales, pues Yeats fue uno de los fundadores (en 1901) de la Compañía de Teatro Nacional Irlandés (Irish National Theatre Society). Su Teatro Abbey (Abbey Theatre) irradió un nuevo espíritu, que surgió como eco del teatro vanguardista francés, aunque inspirado en un principio de la mitología celta irlandesa.
